At a live auction last October during a fundraiser for The Forum School, a vibrant painting of a toucan sold for $500. The painting is the work of 15-year-old Phoenix, one of five students from The Forum School whose artwork was on display at a Wildlife Painting Exhibit at the Waldwick Public Library. The art show took place throughout the month of April, and coincided with Autism Awareness Month.

Trish Grego, the art teacher at The Forum School, says her students worked on their acrylic painting skills in preparation for the library exhibit.

“I use art to give the students opportunities to problem-solve, explore sensory experiences, express themselves, and learn how to use art as a coping skill for stress. We work with 3-D design crafts, painting, drawing, weaving, and collage. Most of our projects are multi-process to increase focus and encourage commitment to the process,” she said.

“Our students have challenges, but they also have many gifts and strengths,” added Brian Detlefsen, school principal. “This Art Show allows our friends and neighbors to look beyond the label of autism and see our students as artists.”
