There are many misconceptions when it comes to understanding the creativity and imagination of students on the autism spectrum. Many people hold a limited view, assuming that all people with autism are logical and sequential, and favor rote tasks.

In art classes, students learn the building blocks of expression: color, line, shape, and design. Students are exposed to a variety of mediums and art techniques including painting, collage, sculpture, and clay.

Teachers further their art education by introducing them to the works of famous artists. Through music instruction, students explore and experience sound, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, melody, harmony, and texture. Understanding that music education is both self-expressive and therapeutic, students are also increasing their cognitive, emotional, social, and motor skills.

As students develop and refine their skills as artists and musicians, they learn and use problem-solving techniques to advance their creativity and expression. Technology is a vital part of our arts instruction, and is incorporated into the curriculum for research, photography, and creative expression.

Visual artists have their work proudly displayed for all to enjoy, and participate in an annual art show at the school. Often, student work is exhibited at community venues including local libraries, community centers, and theaters.
