The pandemic may have interrupted our students’ lives and the lives of their families, making them feel adrift, but The Forum School is working to help anchor them to our school community and provide a safe harbor when things get difficult.
Our fulltime BCBA, Krissy Lerner, works collaboratively with parents to address behavioral issues that arise at home. Sometimes that means writing a social story about wearing a mask; sometimes it means creating a custom visual schedule to keep a student on task for remote learning; and for some, it means one-on-one support.
“I meet with students remotely to practice mindfulness exercises and visualizations to help them regulate their emotions. Skills like deep breathing and present moment awareness are part of a tool kit they can use on their own, whether to decompress after a day of remote learning, or simply when missing their friends,” said Ms. Lerner.
